Garima Voyage Travel & Tours, è un tour operator specializzato in turismo e trekking sostenibili che opera in Nepal, ma i progetti di Federica e Rabindra in realtà vanno molto oltre. Garima è a tutti gli effetti un’impresa sociale il cui obiettivo principale è quello di promuovere il turismo non solo per i profitti, ma soprattutto come veicolo per scopi superiori: consapevoli del grande impatto che questo settore può avere sullo sviluppo locale, il team di Garima si sta impegnando fortemente per costruire un turismo che si prenda cura del territorio e che migliori la qualità della vita delle comunità coinvolte.
Questo scopo si riflette in tutti i progetti che Garima ha intrapreso nei suoi anni di attività, primo fra tutti l’apertura e la mappatura di una rete di sentieri di trekking nei territori di Melamchi e Panchpokhari, bellissime destinazioni rurali ancora inesplorate. Ma questo progetto fa parte di un obiettivo molto più ambizioso: Garima punta infatti ad ottenere per queste destinazioni la certificazione di destinazione sostenibile, prima del suo genere in Nepal. La certificazione potrà aiutare lo sviluppo del turismo in queste zone seguendo i principi della sostenibilità, rispettando quindi l’ambiente e le popolazioni locali, mantenendo intatta la loro autenticità.
Il team di Garima è già pienamente operativo verso l’ottenimento della certificazione!
Per quanto riguarda la campagna crowdfunding, siamo partiti questa primavera con la prima fase del progetto, che si è focalizzata sulle azioni da intraprendere per certificare un gruppo di strutture ricettive (homestay, resort, hotel) che si trovano lungo i diversi percorsi di trekking delle destinazioni di Melamchi e Panchpokhari. Successivamente, nella seconda fase del progetto che inizierà in autunno, grazie al coinvolgimento delle autorità locali e nazionali, punteremo a certificare l’intera area della destinazione per il 2024.
Ottenere una certificazione di sostenibilità richiede di seguire e rispettare diversi criteri che toccano vari ambiti, ma soprattutto di dimostrare l’impegno verso un miglioramento continuo del proprio livello di sostenibilità. Tra le varie possibili alternative, abbiamo individuato lo schema di certificazione GSTC, sviluppato dagli enti delle Nazioni Unite che si occupano di turismo e di ambiente (UNWTO e UNEP), che non solo è riconosciuto a livello internazionale e si avvale di accreditamento fatto da parti terze, ma che si adatta anche alle esigenze degli alloggi e della destinazione del delicato contesto emergente in cui ci troviamo. Siamo inoltre affiancati da Etifor, spin-off dell’Università di Padova, che si occupa di sostenibilità, che sta formando noi e anche qualche rappresentante delle strutture ricettive locali su come seguire questo percorso.
Per il primo step siamo scesi direttamente in campo, anzi sui sentieri! Siamo infatti andati personalmente a visitare tutti i diversi alloggi che sono interessati ad ottenere la certificazione per valutare la loro situazione in merito alla sostenibilità: tramite questionari, interviste e raccolta dati abbiamo cercato di capire quali sono le principali tematiche su cui sarà necessario lavorare per rispettare i criteri della certificazione. Grazie ai dati raccolti, e all’indispensabile lavoro delle studentesse della laurea magistrale in Management della Sostenibilità e del Turismo dell’Università di Trento, Martina Panero e Serena De Franceschi, siamo stati in grado di creare un elenco di problemi che possono essere affrontati a breve termine e dei futuri training che verranno proposti ai proprietari delle strutture e alla comunità locale.
Siamo consapevoli che sviluppare un turismo sostenibile porti grandissimi benefici ma che richieda anche un forte impegno: per prendere il via, il nostro progetto infatti ha bisogno del sostegno e della cooperazione di tutta la comunità dei territori coinvolti. Ciò include non solo chi lavora direttamente nel turismo, ma anche autorità locali, opinion leader ed esperti del settore turistico.
Per questo, negli ultimi mesi abbiamo incontrato diverse persone della comunità, leader e rappresentanti, condividendo con loro l’idea e gli obiettivi del nostro progetto e chiedendo il loro parere e supporto, riuscendo a instaurare delle collaborazioni importanti basate su una visione comune. Tra gli attori dell’ambito turistico con cui abbiamo avuto modo di confrontarci contiamo anche il Ministro nepalese del Turismo e i dirigenti del Nepal Tourism Board, oltre ai professori della facoltà di turismo della Tribhuvan University e quelli del Master in International Cooperation e Development della Mid-West University di Kathmandu.
Ma non dimentichiamo che la sostenibilità punta ad offrire opportunità tanto alle generazioni presenti che a quelle future! È importante favorire la condivisione di idee e conoscenze su questo tema anche con i più giovani: per questo motivo abbiamo organizzato un laboratorio interattivo per gli studenti della Terse Secondary School, nel villaggio di Talamarang nel Melamchi, colpito dall’alluvione del 2021, incentrato sulla sostenibilità e sul turismo, come veicoli per lo sviluppo locale. Molti studenti hanno partecipato alle tre giornate di lezione, mostrando entusiasmo e curiosità per il tema, e speriamo che la consapevolezza maturata cresca con loro nel futuro. Abbiamo inoltre in programma di ripetere questa esperienza in altre scuole che hanno manifestato il loro interesse per trattare questo aspetto.
A causa delle elezioni per gli enti governativi locali tenutesi in tutto il Nepal a metà maggio, alcuni dei nostri piani sono stati rallentati: in Nepal infatti il periodo delle elezioni è molto sentito e partecipato, sia prima che dopo, tanto da mettere in secondo piano qualsiasi altra questione a livello amministrativo. Ma non ci siamo lasciati fermare!
Abbiamo comunque portato a termine importanti obiettivi e siamo riusciti ad incontrare i nuovi rappresentanti di Melamchi e Panch Pokhari, che si sono dimostrati entusiasti di proseguire con noi il progetto verso la certificazione della destinazione. Per noi risulta fondamentale che ci sia condivisione di idee, appoggio e vicinanza da parte dei nuovi amministratori locali, anche a livello comunale, come il Sindaco e la ViceSindaco Mrs. Uma Pradhan, che siamo felici di vedere in questa posizione in quanto ha partecipato fin dal 2018 in prima persona alla progettazione ma anche al lavoro sul campo dei nostri progetti.
Siamo sicuri che la prospettiva di sviluppo sostenibile sia condivisa ancora di più dalla popolazione locale, e gli scambi avvenuti anche con i vari capi villaggi appena eletti all’interno del comune ci dà entusiasmo riguardo la pianificazione degli interventi.
A conclusione di questi primi mesi di duro lavoro, abbiamo organizzato un importante evento di cui andiamo molto fieri: il primo Workshop sul Turismo Sostenibile per le destinazioni di Melamchi e Panchpokhari! Il workshop si è tenuto il 23 maggio presso il Prakriti Resort & Organic Farm, eco-resort le cui iniziative sostenibili sono da modello per tutta la destinazione. Lo scopo principale della giornata era quello di aumentare la consapevolezza sull’importanza della sostenibilità nel turismo dei proprietari delle homestay e di tutta la comunità locale. Hanno partecipato anche diverse autorità locali, oltre che esperti del settore turistico sia nepalesi che italiani, che hanno condiviso le proprie conoscenze ed esperienze sul tema, tra cui i docenti della laurea magistrale in Management della Sostenibilità e del Turismo dell’Università di Trento e la presidente della SAT – Società Alpinisti Tridentini.
Questo workshop è stata un’ottima occasione per condividere con tutti le informazioni che abbiamo raccolto in questi ultimi mesi, oltre che gli impatti positivi che ci aspettiamo dal processo di certificazione. Inoltre, abbiamo consegnato ad ogni partecipante delle importanti linee guida da seguire riguardanti i criteri per raggiungere la certificazione, sviluppate da noi a seguito della precedente valutazione fatta visitando i vari alloggi, incluse delle azioni concrete che ogni proprietario può mettere in atto da subito.
La prima fase di interventi vede i monsoni alla porte che impediscono di proseguire con gli spostamenti necessari tra le varie homestay, ma che ci danno il tempo di organizzare i training sui temi in cui abbiamo individuato le lacune maggiori. Questa fase si conclude con la preparazione di varia documentazione necessaria alla certificazione, nonché con la pianificazione di semplici interventi in merito alla gestione delle acque grigie e alla costruzione degli alloggi, dove vediamo già i primi effetti positivi dei nostri sforzi.
La lamiera è stata sostituita da materiale locale, sostenibile, con un trattamento poco costoso che protegge dalla pioggia e visivamente più in armonia con il contesto in cui si trova. La preparazione dei report finali ci è stata fortemente richiesta sia dalle autorità locali che nazionali, il che ci conferma l’interesse di muoverci insieme nella stessa direzione. A giugno si concluderà questa prima fase e partirà la pianificazione della seconda, stimolante ed entusiasmante fase. Stay tuned!
ENGLISH VERSION – UPDATE OF WORKS
Garima Voyage Travel & Tours is a tour operator specialized in sustainable tourism and trekking operating in Nepal but Federica and Rabindra’s projects actually go much further. Garima is to all intents a social enterprise, whose main objective is to promote tourism not only for profits, but above all as a vehicle for higher purposes: aware of the great impact this sector can have on local development, the team of Garima is strongly committed to building a tourism that takes care of the territory and improves the quality of life of the communities involved.
This purpose is reflected in all the projects that Garima has undertaken in its years of activity, first of all the opening and mapping of a network of trekking trails in the territories of Melamchi and Panchpokhari, beautiful yet unexplored rural destinations. But this project is part of a much more ambitious goal: Garima aims to obtain the sustainable destination certification for these destinations, the first of its kind in Nepal. The certification will help the development of tourism in these areas by following the principles of sustainability, thus respecting the environment and local populations, while keeping their authenticity intact.
The Garima team is already fully operational towards obtaining the certification!
For crowdfunding campaign, we started this spring with the first phase of the project, which focused on the actions to be taken to certify a group of accommodation facilities (homestays, resorts, hotels) that are located along the different trekking routes of the destinations of Melamchi and Panchpokhari. Subsequently, thanks to the involvement of local and national authorities, in the second phase of the project, which will begin in autumn, we aim to certify the entire area of the destination for 2024.
Obtaining a sustainability certification requires you to follow and respect various criteria that affect different areas, but above all requires to demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement of your level of sustainability. Among the various possible alternatives, we have identified the GSTC certification scheme, developed by the United Nations bodies in charge of tourism and environment (UNWTO and UNEP), which is not only internationally recognized and avails itself of accreditation made by third parties, but which also adapts to the needs of the accommodations and the destination, being this a delicate emerging context. We are also supported by Etifor, a spin-off of the University of Padua dealing with sustainability, that is training us and some representatives of local accommodations on how to follow this path.
For the first step we went directly on the field… or better to say on the trails! In fact, we personally went to visit all the different accommodations that are interested in obtaining the certification to evaluate their situation regarding sustainability: through surveys, interviews and data collection we tried to understand what are the main issues on which it will be necessary to work to respect the criteria for certification. Thanks to the data collected, and the indispensable work of the students of the Master in Management of Sustainability and Tourism of the University of Trento, Martina Panero and Serena De Franceschi, we were able to create a list of problems that can be addressed in the short term and a list of future trainings that will be offered to the owners of the structures and to the local community.
We are aware that developing sustainable tourism brings great benefits but also requires a strong commitment: to get started, our project in fact needs the support and cooperation of the entire community of the territories involved. This includes not only those who work directly in tourism, but also local authorities, opinion leaders and experts in the tourism sector. For this reason, in recent months we have met several people from the community, leaders and representatives, sharing the idea and objectives of our project and asking for their opinion and support, managing to establish important collaborations based on a common vision. Among the actors of the tourism sector with which we had the opportunity to discuss, we also count the Nepalese Minister of Tourism and the managers of the Nepal Tourism Board, in addition to some professors of the tourism faculty of the Tribhuvan University and those of the Master in International Cooperation and Development of the Mid-West University of Kathmandu.
But let’s not forget that sustainability aims to offer opportunities for both present and future generations! It is important to encourage the sharing of ideas and knowledge on this topic even with the youngest: for this reason we have organized an interactive workshop for the students of the Terse Secondary School, in the village of Talamarang in Melamchi, that was severely hit by the flood of 2021. During the workshop we focused on sustainability and tourism as vehicles for local development. Many students participated in the three days-lessons, showing enthusiasm and curiosity for the topic, and we hope that the awareness they gained will grow with them in the future. We also plan to repeat this experience in other schools that have expressed their interest in dealing with this aspect.
Due to the elections for local government bodies held all over Nepal in mid-May, some of our plans have been slowed down: in Nepal, in fact, the elections period is very much felt and participated, both before and after, to the point of overshadowing any other administrative matter. But we didn’t let it stop us! Even so, we achieved important goals and managed to meet the new representatives of Melamchi and Panch Pokhari, who were enthusiastic to continue the project with us towards the certification of the destination. For us it is essential to have a common vision, support and closeness with the new local administrators, also at the municipal level, such as with the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor Mrs. Uma Pradhan, who we are happy to see in this position as she participated in the design of the project since 2018, helping in first person also on the field. We are sure that the vision of sustainable development is shared even more by the local population, and the exchanges that took place with the various newly elected village leaders of the municipality give us enthusiasm for the planning of future interventions.
At the end of these first months of hard work, we have organized an important event of which we are very proud: the first Workshop on Sustainable Tourism for the destinations of Melamchi and Panchpokhari! The workshop was held on May 23rd at Prakriti Resort & Organic Farm, an eco-resort whose sustainable initiatives are a model for the entire destination. The main purpose of the day was to raise awareness of the importance of sustainability in tourism for homestay owners and the entire local community. Several local authorities also participated, as well as experts in the tourism sector both Nepalese and Italians, who shared their knowledge and experiences on the subject, including the professors of the master’s degree in Management of Sustainability and Tourism of the University of Trento and the president of the SAT – Tridentini Alpinists Society.
This workshop was an excellent opportunity to share with everyone the information we have collected in recent months, as well as the positive impacts we expect from the certification process. Furthermore, we have given each participant important guidelines to follow regarding the criteria to achieve certification, that we developed following the previous evaluation made by visiting the various accommodations, including concrete actions that each owner can immediately implement.
The first phase of interventions is now ending due to the monsoon season, which prevents us from continuing with the necessary movements between the various homestays, but on the other hand, it gives us time to organize trainings related to the issues in which we identified the major gaps.
This phase ends with the preparation of various documentation necessary for certification, and with the planning of simple interventions regarding greywater management and the construction and modification of some accommodations’ buildings, where it is possible to see the first positive effects of our efforts.
The sheet metal has been replaced by local, sustainable material with an inexpensive treatment that protects from rain and is at the same time less impactful on the landscape. The preparation of the final reports was strongly requested by both local and national authorities, confirming the interest in moving together in the same direction. This first phase will end in June and the planning of the second stimulating and exciting phase will just start. Stay tuned!
